Crosswind Landing

🛫 Scenario Setup

KDEN Runway 17L. Wind 230/18G28 – approximately 15-18 kt crosswind component. ILS 17L in use. Visibility 10sm, ceiling 2500 OVC.

💥 Failure Injection

Standard ILS 17L with gusty crosswind. No failures.

📋 Required Actions (Sequence)

  1. Brief crosswind component against demonstrated limit (~30 kt)
  2. Establish crab angle on final to maintain centerline
  3. At flare: apply rudder to align with runway; apply into-wind aileron
  4. Touch down on upwind main gear first
  5. Maintain aileron input throughout rollout
  6. Track centerline with differential braking and rudder

✅ Evaluation Points

  • Crab removed at flare – aligned with runway at touchdown
  • Upwind gear touches first
  • Aileron held into wind throughout rollout
  • Crosswind within aircraft demonstrated limits

❌ Common Errors (UNSAT)

  • Landing with residual crab (side load on gear)
  • Downwind drift at touchdown
  • Releasing aileron pressure after touchdown
  • Exceeding demonstrated crosswind limit

🎓 What the Instructor / Examiner Watches For

TIMING STANDARDS
  • Gear up at positive rate: immediate
  • Flap schedule: at correct speeds
  • Checklist: before designated gate
AUTOMATIC UNSATISFACTORY
  • Gear up before positive rate
  • Below Vref at any time on final
  • Continued approach below DH with no visual
