Engine Fire in Flight

šŸ›« Scenario Setup

FL280, cruise. Left engine (Engine 1) fire warning activates. MASTER WARNING + ENG 1 FIRE on EICAS. Both fire bottles available.

šŸ’„ Failure Injection

ENG 1 FIRE illuminates. MASTER WARNING horn. Engine 1 fire handle lights up.

🧠 MEMORY ITEMS – 30 Second Standard

⚠ These items MUST be performed from memory BEFORE opening the QRH. No reference permitted.
  1. THRUST LEVER (affected engine) → IDLE
  2. FIRE HANDLE (affected engine) → PULL
  3. WAIT 10 SECONDS
  4. FIRE AGENT → DISCHARGE (armed side)
  5. If fire continues → FIRE AGENT → DISCHARGE (disarmed side)
  6. LAND at nearest suitable airport

šŸ“‹ Required Actions (Sequence)

  1. IMMEDIATE MEMORY ITEM 1: Engine 1 THRUST LEVER → IDLE
  2. IMMEDIATE MEMORY ITEM 2: Engine 1 FIRE HANDLE → PULL
  3. WAIT 10 SECONDS for halon to work
  4. IMMEDIATE MEMORY ITEM 3: FIRE AGENT → DISCHARGE (armed side)
  5. If fire persists after 30 seconds: FIRE AGENT → DISCHARGE (disarmed side)
  6. If fire continues: DECLARE EMERGENCY; land nearest suitable immediately
  7. QRH: Single Engine Operations checklist
  8. Single engine cruise altitude determined
  9. ATC: MAYDAY – nature, position, intentions, souls, fuel
  10. KPHX or nearest divert selected and briefed
  11. Single engine approach and landing completed

āœ… Evaluation Points

  • Thrust lever IDLE before pulling fire handle
  • 10-second wait between fire handle pull and bottle discharge
  • Correct engine identified – EICAS cross-check
  • Second bottle logic: only if fire continues
  • ATC notification within 60 seconds

āŒ Common Errors (UNSAT)

  • Discharging bottle immediately without 10-second wait
  • Pulling wrong engine fire handle (fatal error)
  • Not discharging second bottle if fire continues
  • Failing to declare emergency and divert

šŸŽ“ What the Instructor / Examiner Watches For

TIMING STANDARDS
  • O2 masks: within 10 seconds
  • Memory items: within 30 seconds
  • ATC notification: within 60 seconds
AUTOMATIC UNSATISFACTORY
  • Wrong engine shut down
  • Fire handle not pulled
  • RTO above V1 (no incapacitation)
  • Speed below V2 >5 sec
