ILS Approach – Raw Data (No Autopilot)

🛫 Scenario Setup

KIAD ILS 01C. Weather: 300 OVC, vis 1sm. AP and FD turned off at FAF. Raw data ILS only.

💥 Failure Injection

AP and FD failed (simulated) at FAF. Fly raw data ILS to DH.

📋 Required Actions (Sequence)

  1. Confirm LOC and GS needle positions – center both
  2. Control pitch to maintain glideslope (½ dot high: lower nose slightly)
  3. Control heading/bank to track localizer (½ dot right: fly right)
  4. Airspeed: Vref – use trim to reduce control pressures
  5. Cross-check every 5 seconds: LOC – GS – airspeed – VSI
  6. PM calls deviations: 'Localizer alive', 'Full scale', 'Going below glide'
  7. At DH: runway in sight or go-around

✅ Evaluation Points

  • LOC ±½ dot consistently
  • GS ±½ dot consistently
  • Airspeed Vref ±5 knots
  • No full-scale deflection
  • DH call immediate

❌ Common Errors (UNSAT)

  • Chasing the needles – over-controlling
  • Fixating on one needle while other deviates
  • Speed below Vref
  • Not cross-checking all instruments regularly

🎓 What the Instructor / Examiner Watches For

TIMING STANDARDS
  • Landing config: before FAF
  • Stabilized by 1,000 ft IMC / 500 ft VMC
  • DH/MDA decision: immediate
AUTOMATIC UNSATISFACTORY
  • Full scale CDI deflection uncorrected
  • Below DH/MDA without visual
  • Unstabilized below gate – no go-around
