ILS Approach – Coupled (Autopilot)

🛫 Scenario Setup

KDEN ILS 35L. Weather: 400 OVC, vis 3/4sm. Localizer and Glideslope both operational. ATIS received, approach briefed.

💥 Failure Injection

Standard ILS approach – no failures. Coupled via autopilot.

📋 Required Actions (Sequence)

  1. Full approach brief before FAF: airport, approach type, frequencies, DH, missed approach, alternates
  2. Intercept localizer at or above glideslope intercept altitude
  3. Arm approach mode on MCP/FCU
  4. Configure: Gear down, landing flaps, before-landing checklist by FAF
  5. Monitor AP for LOC and GS tracking
  6. 1,000 ft: 'Stabilized' call from PM
  7. At DH: visual or go-around decision – no delay
  8. If visual: 'Continue' – disengage AP for landing (or autoland if authorized)

✅ Evaluation Points

  • LOC within ±½ dot throughout final
  • GS within ±½ dot throughout final
  • Landing configuration before FAF
  • DH decision immediate – no descent below DH without visual

❌ Common Errors (UNSAT)

  • Late configuration – gear/flaps not set by FAF
  • Full-scale deflection without correction
  • Continuing below DH without runway environment in sight
  • Late checklist completion

🎓 What the Instructor / Examiner Watches For

TIMING STANDARDS
  • Landing config: before FAF
  • Stabilized by 1,000 ft IMC / 500 ft VMC
  • DH/MDA decision: immediate
AUTOMATIC UNSATISFACTORY
  • Full scale CDI deflection uncorrected
  • Below DH/MDA without visual
  • Unstabilized below gate – no go-around
