RNAV (GPS) LPV Approach

🛫 Scenario Setup

KCOS RNAV (GPS) RWY 35R. LPV minimums: DA 6,954 ft (303 ft HAT), vis 3/4sm. WAAS available. FMS loaded and verified.

💥 Failure Injection

LPV approach – SBAS lateral and vertical guidance available.

📋 Required Actions (Sequence)

  1. Verify WAAS availability – check GPS status page
  2. Brief: LPV DA, missed approach procedure, field elevation
  3. Load and activate approach in FMS – verify correct airport and runway
  4. Configure before FAF – gear, flaps, checklist
  5. Monitor LNAV/VNAV guidance – treat as ILS for standards
  6. At DA: visual or go-around – same standard as ILS DH

✅ Evaluation Points

  • WAAS status verified before approach
  • LPV treated as precision approach (DA, not MDA)
  • CDI within ±½ dot lateral and vertical
  • DA decision immediate

❌ Common Errors (UNSAT)

  • Not verifying WAAS availability
  • Flying LPV to MDA instead of DA (non-precision technique on precision approach)
  • Late activation of approach in FMS

🎓 What the Instructor / Examiner Watches For

TIMING STANDARDS
  • Landing config: before FAF
  • Stabilized by 1,000 ft IMC / 500 ft VMC
  • DH/MDA decision: immediate
AUTOMATIC UNSATISFACTORY
  • Full scale CDI deflection uncorrected
  • Below DH/MDA without visual
  • Unstabilized below gate – no go-around
