Hydraulic System 2 Failure

🛫 Scenario Setup

En route FL260. Hydraulic System 2 pressure suddenly drops to zero. EDP failure confirmed.

💥 Failure Injection

HYD SYS 2 FAULT on EICAS. System 2 pressure: 0 PSI.

📋 Required Actions (Sequence)

  1. Acknowledge EICAS warning
  2. Identify: HYD SYS 2 – confirm with PM
  3. QRH: Hydraulic System 2 failure checklist
  4. Assess what is lost: flight controls, landing gear, braking (verify per aircraft)
  5. Plan for alternate gear extension
  6. Brief alternate brake system or accumulator braking for landing
  7. Notify ATC if divert required
  8. Land at airport with long runway and emergency services

✅ Evaluation Points

  • Correct QRH identified and completed
  • Alternate gear extension briefed
  • Accumulator braking technique understood
  • Landing runway selection appropriate (long enough)

❌ Common Errors (UNSAT)

  • Not identifying what loads are lost with System 2
  • Attempting normal gear extension when system is inoperative
  • Not briefing crew on abnormal landing configuration

🎓 What the Instructor / Examiner Watches For

TIMING STANDARDS
  • Correct QRH: within 60 seconds of recognition
  • ATC notification: when safety allows
AUTOMATIC UNSATISFACTORY
  • Operating wrong system off
  • No divert decision when required
