Normal Takeoff – IFR Departure

🛫 Scenario Setup

KPHX Runway 26, IFR conditions: 1500 OVC, vis 4sm, wind 260/12. KAYEX5 SID, FL240 initial. CRJ-900, Flaps 8, FLEX TO if available. ATIS received, clearance on file.

💥 Failure Injection

Normal departure – no failures. Evaluate all standard procedures.

📋 Required Actions (Sequence)

  1. Before-takeoff flow and checklist complete
  2. Thrust set to FLEX or TOGA – callout '80 knots' at 80 KIAS
  3. PM calls V1, VR, V2 – PF rotates smoothly at VR
  4. Positive rate confirmed – PF calls 'Gear up'
  5. Flaps retracted on schedule above flap limiting speeds
  6. Climb thrust set at acceleration altitude
  7. Comply with SID restrictions – LNAV/VNAV or managed climb
  8. Sterile cockpit enforced below 10,000 ft

✅ Evaluation Points

  • V2 maintained within +10/-5 KIAS
  • Runway heading within ±10° to 400 ft AGL
  • Gear called up only after positive rate on BOTH VSI and altimeter
  • Sterile cockpit – no non-essential conversation below 10,000 ft
  • Climb checklist completed at acceleration altitude

❌ Common Errors (UNSAT)

  • Early gear retraction before positive rate confirmed
  • Flap retraction before proper speed attained
  • Heading deviation on initial climb
  • Failing to enforce sterile cockpit

🎓 What the Instructor / Examiner Watches For

TIMING STANDARDS
  • Gear up at positive rate: immediate
  • Flap schedule: at correct speeds
  • Checklist: before designated gate
AUTOMATIC UNSATISFACTORY
  • Gear up before positive rate
  • Below Vref at any time on final
  • Continued approach below DH with no visual
