TCAS Resolution Advisory (RA)

šŸ›« Scenario Setup

FL230, level flight. ATC has just issued a climb clearance to FL250. TCAS detects conflicting traffic.

šŸ’„ Failure Injection

TCAS: 'CLIMB, CLIMB' RA activates simultaneously with ATC clearance to climb.

🧠 MEMORY ITEMS – 30 Second Standard

⚠ These items MUST be performed from memory BEFORE opening the QRH. No reference permitted.
  1. RESPOND TO RA IMMEDIATELY – NO HESITATION
  2. CLIMB RA → pitch up to commanded VSI
  3. DESCEND RA → pitch down to commanded VSI
  4. DO NOT follow conflicting ATC instruction
  5. NOTIFY ATC: 'TCAS RA'
  6. RETURN to clearance after 'Clear of Conflict'

šŸ“‹ Required Actions (Sequence)

  1. IMMEDIATE: Respond to RA – CLIMB (do NOT follow ATC clearance that conflicts)
  2. Increase pitch to achieve commanded VSI on TCAS display
  3. If AP engaged: verify it complies with RA; disconnect if it fights the RA
  4. Notify ATC: 'TCAS RA, unable clearance'
  5. Maintain RA response until 'Clear of Conflict' annunciation
  6. Return to ATC clearance after RA clears
  7. Notify ATC: '[Callsign] TCAS RA clear, returning to [altitude]'

āœ… Evaluation Points

  • RA responded to immediately – within 2 seconds
  • Correct direction (climb, not descend)
  • ATC instruction NOT followed when conflicting with RA
  • ATC notified of RA
  • Return to clearance after RA clears

āŒ Common Errors (UNSAT)

  • Ignoring RA or hesitating
  • Following ATC instruction instead of RA
  • Maneuvering opposite to RA
  • Not notifying ATC

šŸŽ“ What the Instructor / Examiner Watches For

TIMING STANDARDS
  • O2 masks: within 10 seconds
  • Emergency descent: within 30 seconds
  • MAYDAY call: during descent
  • Squawk 7700: immediate
AUTOMATIC UNSATISFACTORY
  • O2 masks not donned first
  • Descent below 10,000 ft ignoring terrain
  • TCAS RA ignored or reversed
  • GPWS hesitation
