TCAS Resolution Advisory (RA)
š« Scenario Setup
FL230, level flight. ATC has just issued a climb clearance to FL250. TCAS detects conflicting traffic.
š„ Failure Injection
TCAS: 'CLIMB, CLIMB' RA activates simultaneously with ATC clearance to climb.
š§ MEMORY ITEMS ā 30 Second Standard
ā These items MUST be performed from memory BEFORE opening the QRH. No reference permitted.
- RESPOND TO RA IMMEDIATELY ā NO HESITATION
- CLIMB RA ā pitch up to commanded VSI
- DESCEND RA ā pitch down to commanded VSI
- DO NOT follow conflicting ATC instruction
- NOTIFY ATC: 'TCAS RA'
- RETURN to clearance after 'Clear of Conflict'
š Required Actions (Sequence)
- IMMEDIATE: Respond to RA ā CLIMB (do NOT follow ATC clearance that conflicts)
- Increase pitch to achieve commanded VSI on TCAS display
- If AP engaged: verify it complies with RA; disconnect if it fights the RA
- Notify ATC: 'TCAS RA, unable clearance'
- Maintain RA response until 'Clear of Conflict' annunciation
- Return to ATC clearance after RA clears
- Notify ATC: '[Callsign] TCAS RA clear, returning to [altitude]'
ā Evaluation Points
- RA responded to immediately ā within 2 seconds
- Correct direction (climb, not descend)
- ATC instruction NOT followed when conflicting with RA
- ATC notified of RA
- Return to clearance after RA clears
ā Common Errors (UNSAT)
- Ignoring RA or hesitating
- Following ATC instruction instead of RA
- Maneuvering opposite to RA
- Not notifying ATC
š What the Instructor / Examiner Watches For
TIMING STANDARDS
- O2 masks: within 10 seconds
- Emergency descent: within 30 seconds
- MAYDAY call: during descent
- Squawk 7700: immediate
AUTOMATIC UNSATISFACTORY
- O2 masks not donned first
- Descent below 10,000 ft ignoring terrain
- TCAS RA ignored or reversed
- GPWS hesitation
