Rapid Decompression

šŸ›« Scenario Setup

FL370, airway V105, mountainous terrain below (14,500 ft MSL). Both engines normal. Cabin altitude alert activates. Outflow valve malfunction.

šŸ’„ Failure Injection

CABIN ALTITUDE HI warning. MASTER WARNING. Cabin altitude rising rapidly to 14,000+ ft.

🧠 MEMORY ITEMS – 30 Second Standard

⚠ These items MUST be performed from memory BEFORE opening the QRH. No reference permitted.
  1. O2 MASKS ON → 100% / EMERGENCY
  2. THRUST LEVERS → IDLE
  3. SPEED BRAKES → FULL
  4. DESCEND AT VMO/MMO
  5. TARGET: 10,000 ft OR MEA (whichever higher)
  6. ATC → MAYDAY
  7. SQUAWK 7700

šŸ“‹ Required Actions (Sequence)

  1. IMMEDIATE: Oxygen masks ON (100%/Emergency) – BOTH crew simultaneously
  2. Establish interphone communication on O2 masks
  3. Initiate emergency descent: THRUST LEVERS IDLE + SPEED BRAKES FULL
  4. Descend at VMO/MMO – do not exceed
  5. Target altitude: 10,000 ft OR MEA/MORA whichever is HIGHER
  6. ATC: MAYDAY call – aircraft, position, emergency, altitude, intentions
  7. Squawk 7700
  8. QRH: Rapid Decompression checklist after descent established
  9. FA notification via interphone
  10. Select divert airport – nearest suitable with ILS

āœ… Evaluation Points

  • O2 masks donned within 10 seconds
  • Emergency descent initiated within 30 seconds
  • VMO/MMO used for descent – not below
  • Terrain considered – MEA used if above 10,000 ft
  • MAYDAY call content: complete

āŒ Common Errors (UNSAT)

  • O2 masks not donned before any other action (hypoxia risk)
  • Leveling at 10,000 ft when terrain requires higher altitude
  • Descent rate exceeding VMO/MMO
  • No ATC notification

šŸŽ“ What the Instructor / Examiner Watches For

TIMING STANDARDS
  • O2 masks: within 10 seconds
  • Emergency descent: within 30 seconds
  • MAYDAY call: during descent
  • Squawk 7700: immediate
AUTOMATIC UNSATISFACTORY
  • O2 masks not donned first
  • Descent below 10,000 ft ignoring terrain
  • TCAS RA ignored or reversed
  • GPWS hesitation
