Windshear Escape Maneuver
š« Scenario Setup
ILS approach, 700 ft AGL, active SIGMET for microburst windshear. PIREP from preceding aircraft: severe windshear on final.
š„ Failure Injection
Airspeed suddenly -22 knots below target. VSI shows unexpected -1,800 fpm. WINDSHEAR aural alert.
š§ MEMORY ITEMS ā 30 Second Standard
ā These items MUST be performed from memory BEFORE opening the QRH. No reference permitted.
- TOGA ā IMMEDIATE
- PITCH ā 15° (follow FD or stick shaker onset)
- CONFIGURATION ā NO CHANGE
- HOLD ā do not reduce pitch for airspeed
š Required Actions (Sequence)
- IMMEDIATE: TOGA ā both thrust levers full TOGA
- PITCH: rotate to 15 degrees nose up (stick shaker = pitch limit)
- MAINTAIN current flap/gear configuration ā do NOT retract
- HOLD pitch attitude through the shear ā do not chase airspeed
- After clear: assess fuel and energy
- Request vectors; get updated PIREP before reattempting
- Consider divert if shear remains active
ā Evaluation Points
- TOGA applied immediately at first indication
- Pitch attitude 15 degrees maintained
- No configuration change during escape
- Did not reduce pitch chasing airspeed loss
- Reassessment of conditions before retry
ā Common Errors (UNSAT)
- Delayed response ā waiting for another cue
- Pitching up then immediately lowering nose as airspeed drops
- Retracting flaps during escape (reduces lift)
- Attempting second approach without updated PIREP
š What the Instructor / Examiner Watches For
TIMING STANDARDS
- O2 masks: within 10 seconds
- Emergency descent: within 30 seconds
- MAYDAY call: during descent
- Squawk 7700: immediate
AUTOMATIC UNSATISFACTORY
- O2 masks not donned first
- Descent below 10,000 ft ignoring terrain
- TCAS RA ignored or reversed
- GPWS hesitation
