Windshear Escape Maneuver

šŸ›« Scenario Setup

ILS approach, 700 ft AGL, active SIGMET for microburst windshear. PIREP from preceding aircraft: severe windshear on final.

šŸ’„ Failure Injection

Airspeed suddenly -22 knots below target. VSI shows unexpected -1,800 fpm. WINDSHEAR aural alert.

🧠 MEMORY ITEMS – 30 Second Standard

⚠ These items MUST be performed from memory BEFORE opening the QRH. No reference permitted.
  1. TOGA → IMMEDIATE
  2. PITCH → 15° (follow FD or stick shaker onset)
  3. CONFIGURATION → NO CHANGE
  4. HOLD → do not reduce pitch for airspeed

šŸ“‹ Required Actions (Sequence)

  1. IMMEDIATE: TOGA – both thrust levers full TOGA
  2. PITCH: rotate to 15 degrees nose up (stick shaker = pitch limit)
  3. MAINTAIN current flap/gear configuration – do NOT retract
  4. HOLD pitch attitude through the shear – do not chase airspeed
  5. After clear: assess fuel and energy
  6. Request vectors; get updated PIREP before reattempting
  7. Consider divert if shear remains active

āœ… Evaluation Points

  • TOGA applied immediately at first indication
  • Pitch attitude 15 degrees maintained
  • No configuration change during escape
  • Did not reduce pitch chasing airspeed loss
  • Reassessment of conditions before retry

āŒ Common Errors (UNSAT)

  • Delayed response – waiting for another cue
  • Pitching up then immediately lowering nose as airspeed drops
  • Retracting flaps during escape (reduces lift)
  • Attempting second approach without updated PIREP

šŸŽ“ What the Instructor / Examiner Watches For

TIMING STANDARDS
  • O2 masks: within 10 seconds
  • Emergency descent: within 30 seconds
  • MAYDAY call: during descent
  • Squawk 7700: immediate
AUTOMATIC UNSATISFACTORY
  • O2 masks not donned first
  • Descent below 10,000 ft ignoring terrain
  • TCAS RA ignored or reversed
  • GPWS hesitation
